What is cylindrical grinding?

By cylindrical grinding, we mean rotational-symmetrical grinding. This technique uses specially equipped machines for the very precise machining of a metal surface. Cylindrical grinding is performed on the outside of a round product. At AFMI, we can grind both cylindrical and conical surfaces. The rotation of the grinding disc provides the principal motion. Cylindrical grinding does not involve a tangent plane, but a tangent line. During this process, the swarf immediately falls off the workpiece, so does not impede the grinding process.

What are the benefits of cylindrical grinding?

The cylindrical grinding technique has several benefits:

  • Application of very precise shape and positional tolerances
  • Swarf does not impede the grinding process
  • Ability to machine extremely hard materials

Cylindrical grinding at AFMI

With our CNC grinding machines and our professional employees, we can grind shafts, rings, bushings, calibres and different coatings – such as chrome-plated surfaces – with very high precision. AFMI can grind small profiles or perform shape grinding and machine objects up to a maximum length of 3,000 mm and a 500 mm diameter. We work precisely in accordance with drawings and produce products exactly to size. After cylindrical grinding, we carry out an extensive quality inspection, using our 3D coordinate measuring machine to check the shape and positional tolerance of a product. If the product meets all the required quality criteria, it is shipped to the desired delivery address.

Besides cylindrical grinding, AFMI also provides surface grinding, conical grinding and bore grinding services. For more information about CNC grinding, click here.
